What Causes the Spinning Sensation of Vertigo?

Vertigo is described as the sensation that a person or the things around a person are spinning while in actuality nothing is moving at all. It may happen once and only last a short time, or it may occur over and over again lasting for longer periods of time. It has to do with a problem of the inner ear, the part of the ear that helps keep a person’s balance and regulate where one is located in the surrounding area.

Conditions That Induce Vertigo

  • Labyrinthitis: This is brought about by the flu, allergies, respiratory infections, and other viruses or bacteria. It is a swelling or irritation of the inner ear and can lead to hearing loss.
  • Vestibular Neuronitis: This can be caused by the common cold or flu and can also lead to hearing loss and/or tinnitus (ringing in the ears). It is an inflammation of the vestibular nerve or inner ear.
  • Meniere’s disease: Usually people in their 40s and 50s often experience this, although it can occur at any age. It is accompanied by tinnitus, a feeling of fullness in the affected ear, and hearing loss if not treated properly.
  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: This is a very common form of vertigo that is triggered by moving the head or neck quickly or standing up too fast, and it often begins after an accident.

Help for Those Coping with Vertigo

A relatively small number of people actually suffer from vertigo. But when it does occur, it can be very hard to deal with. Often the root cause of a person’s vertigo has to do with a misalignment of the upper neck vertebrae. A misalignment in either the C1 (atlas) or C2 (axis) bones can put pressure on the brainstem and hinder communication to and from the body and brain. The signals being sent from the ear are distorted leading to the perfect situation for vertigo to occur.

Once an upper neck misalignment is found, a precise and gentle adjustment is given to correct the problem. Most vertigo patients find relief from their symptoms in only one or two adjustments.
