Post Concussion Syndrome: Mysterious Condition with Elusive Treatment Options

Concussion, Neck Trauma, Neck InjuryThe common belief around Concussions is that they are a temporary event that will heal quickly. Post Concussion Syndrome are a common occurrence in many sports and recreational activities that affect 1.6-3.8 million people in the United States.1 Post Concussion Syndrome can happen quickly and often go undetected with little or no symptoms, until they manifest as larger problems years later.

Concussions are also known as Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) which happens when the brain moves inside the skull typically caused by some sort of trauma. Symptoms may be obvious such as nausea, fatigue, and headaches; however some signs are very small and go unnoticed. Recently the founder of MRI looked at fluid in the brain functions in patients with injuries to the head or neck. It was discovered that fluid flow was distorted and could eventually manifest as degenerative neurological diseases as a result of the lack of oxygen.2

Treatment for concussions vary and are typically very intensive, most options typically only treat the symptoms and do not correct cause. This is a rapidly developing industry of healthcare where the condition is not fully understood. The NFL, United States Defense Department, and General Electric are spending millions of dollars to investigate better treatment options. Treatment options vary from using cholesterol drugs such as Lipitor to hyperbaric chambers in an effort to saturate the brain with oxygen for tissue regeneration.3 There are varying results for the differing treatments due to the intricacy of each individual case.

There is new research that is showing a more natural way to improve healing after the brain has been injured. Concussion Specialist Dr Scott Pancake is helping patients get natural relief from concussions in Kissimmee, Florida. Dr. Pancake is a specially trained Upper Cervical Chiropractor that deals with the Atlas Bone (C1 vertebra) as it relates to the brain and nervous system function. Clinical studies have shown that when the Atlas bone under the skull is misaligned that it affects the fluid that delivers oxygen and also provides protection to the brain. When the Atlas is addressed by an Upper Cervical Chiropractic Adjustment that fluid flow is restored and brain function can return quicker.4
