Although one particular cause has not been clearly identified, a link is being seen between fibromyalgia and neck injuries. These injuries can be due to car accidents (whiplash), sports injuries, tripping and falling, and any other type of trauma that affects the head or neck.

The neck is particularly vulnerable to misalignments due to its range of motion. Many times, these accidents may have occurred months or even years before fibromyalgia sets in. Patients may forget they even happened or do not mention them to their doctors because they happened so long ago.
A misalignment in the upper neck vertebrae affects the central nervous system. The brainstem meets with the spinal cord at this location and the C1 and C2 vertebrae actually protect it from harm. However, a misalignment can put undue pressure on the brainstem hindering communication to and from the body and brain. This causes the nervous system to detect pain when there is actually no pain or very little pain.
Once this misalignment is corrected, the body can begin to heal itself using its natural restorative powers. Tissue damage and nervous system malfunction can be reversed, and fibromyalgia symptoms may become a thing of the past. In almost all cases, symptoms have been alleviated to some degree.
