Migraine/Headache

Managing Tension Headaches Without Medications

Tension headaches, sometimes called stress headaches, feel like a tight band is squeezing around your head.  The pain is generally mild to moderate and dull or diffuse.  A person may also have a tender scalp, and tender neck or shoulder muscles.  Despite the fact that tension headaches are so common, its causes are not well understood.

A tension headache is not often bad enough to warrant a doctor or ER visit.  However, the pain of a tension headache can be enough to knock us out for a few hours, or even the better part of the day.  They can be episodic (meaning that they occur fewer than 15 days a month over a three month period) or chronic (occurring more than 15 days a month for at least three months).

Natural Relief for Tension Headaches in Kissimmee, FL

Traditional treatment of tension headaches comes in the form of over the counter pain relievers as the first line of attack.  If the episodes are frequent or severe enough, preventative medications may be recommended, and these often include antidepressants or anticonvulsants.  Since stress seems to be a big contributing factor in the cause of tension headaches, stress-reducing measures may help to reduce their occurrence.

Fortunately, for people looking to cut their tension headaches off at the root cause, there is a natural means of doing so.  Instead of using medications to address the headache symptoms, headache specialist Dr. Pancake takes a different approach.  As an upper cervical chiropractor, Dr. Pancake looks to the vertebrae in the top part of the neck as the underlying cause to many headache conditions.

Even a very minor misalignment in this area can be enough to disrupt normal blood flow and nervous system function – both known factors in the cause of headaches and migraines. Once a gentle correction is made to realign these bones, the healing process is allowed to move forward, and oftentimes headaches and migraines subside as a result.
