Neck Injuries and Your Migraines

Migraine, Migraines, Headache, Headaches, Head Pain, Migraine Headaches, Migraine Relief, Headache Relief, Tension Headache, Tension Headaches, Migraine Headaches, Migraine Headaches ReliefMigraines are an extremely common neurological condition and the 3rd most prevalent illness in the world.  A migraine episode can be extremely disabling, and affects all areas of a person’s life.  Many migraine sufferers do their best to cope with the condition.  That typically involves medications that either tries to prevent future attacks or try to halt an attack that has already begun.

A connection that has been receiving more attention lately is that of past neck injuries.  Even a seemingly minor accident or injury can damage tissues in the neck and cause spinal issues that can lead to migraines.  While taking medications might provide some temporary relief, many migraine sufferers are looking for a solution that isn’t fleeting.

Migraines and Your Upper Cervical Spine

A connection that may be easily overlooked is a previous injury to the head or neck and the eventual onset of migraines.  In a research study that looked at 101 headache sufferers, 87 of them had sustained some type of injury to the upper neck.  This injury didn’t have to be major – it could have been a minor fender bender or slip and fall, and it may have even occurred several years prior to the onset of migraines.

Having the alignment of the upper vertebrae in your neck checked if you are suffering from migraines is extremely important, especially if you have some type of neck injury in your past.  Because the upper cervical vertebrae protect the brainstem, when they misalign they can create abnormal blood and oxygen flow to and from the brain as well as abnormal nervous system function.  Getting this misalignment corrected is very gentle and very specific and can lead to lasting relief of migraines.
