Pregnancy brings along with it many new sensations, aches, and pains. For some, that means the onset of new headaches or migraines that may not have been present before the pregnancy. There are several factors that can cause migraines to occur during pregnancy including hormone levels, changes in nerve pathways, and blood flow in the brain. Estrogen is believed to be a contributing factor in migraines, which is another reason why pregnancy (as well as menstruation and menopause) can bring on new episodes of migraines.
The problem is that many medications used for migraines can cause unwanted side effects and may not be safe during pregnancy for the developing baby. This may leave you feeling helpless to combat the many painful symptoms of a migraine. One of the first things for a pregnant woman (or anyone for that matter) experiencing migraines is to understand the possible triggers so that the necessary changes to habits can be made. Common migraine triggers in pregnant women include:
- Certain smells, such as tobacco smoke
- Certain food additives, such as nitrates
- Excessive temperatures, both hot and cold
- Glaring lights

Safe & Effective Migraine Care During Pregnancy
As you well know, there’s a big difference between managing a condition and overcoming it. Migraines can sometimes be managed by various medications or other treatments, but symptomatic relief does not address the root cause of the problem. Upper cervical chiropractic is a very specific type of chiropractic that focuses on the realignment of the top two vertebrae in the neck. When one or both of these vertebrae are out of alignment, even by fractions of a millimeter, it can place abnormal pressure on the brainstem. This hinders the brain’s ability to communicate with the rest of the body over the central nervous system.
In our practice, we use the Atlas Orthogonal technique, which is a very precise and extremely gentle way of correcting misalignments of the upper cervical spine. When normal alignment is achieved, the body’s natural healing process is allowed to occur without obstruction, giving migraine sufferers some much-needed relief. Best of all, it comes with no harmful side effects and is totally safe and effective for pregnant women.
