Academic Emergency Medicine recently published an article about a study done by Dr. Ali Saber Tehrani outlining the financial burden of vertigo due to emergency room visits. Vertigo related visits make up about 4% of all ER costs, equaling about $4 billion a year.
A few years before the above study, almost 10 million people went to the emergency department complaining of vertigo or dizzy spells. The cost contributed to these visits made up more than $1,000 per person, mostly due to the cost of tests that were run to diagnose the problem. Some costs were attributed to medication. There are more than 50 different medications used to control vertigo.
A Link Between Vertigo and Whiplash
Up to 50% of those suffering from vertigo also experienced whiplash due to a car accident at some point in the past. Some see their symptoms of spinning begin to lessen after just a few days, while others have symptoms that last for many years after the injury occurred.

Whiplash does not always involve a vehicle as it can happen at speeds as low as 5 mph. This means that beyond the above-mentioned 50%, others suffering from vertigo may have also had whiplash induced vertigo that did not involve a car accident.
Can Anything Relieve Whiplash?
Whatever the reason may be behind it, if a person is suffering from spells of spinning it is important for him to seek out the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. We often see, in our vertigo patients, a misalignment of the upper neck vertebrae. This sort of misalignment hinders communication throughout the body and brain. Improper signals are sent to the brain about the position of the body, leading to spinning. Once the upper bones of the neck are realigned, patients frequently experience fewer symptoms. Many have vertigo disappear entirely. There are numerous studies that confirm the benefits of upper cervical chiropractic.
