Vertigo is described as the sensation that a person or the things around a person are spinning while in actuality nothing is moving at all. It may happen once and only last a short time, or it may occur over and over again lasting for longer periods of time. It has to do with a problem of the inner ear, the part of the ear that helps keep a person’s balance and regulate where one is located in the surrounding area.

Conditions That Induce Vertigo

  • Labyrinthitis: This is brought about by the flu, allergies, respiratory infections, and other viruses or bacteria. It is a swelling or irritation of the inner ear and can lead to hearing loss.
  • Vestibular Neuronitis: This can be caused by the common cold or flu and can also lead to hearing loss and/or tinnitus (ringing in the ears). It is an inflammation of the vestibular nerve or inner ear.
  • Meniere’s disease: Usually people in their 40s and 50s often experience this, although it can occur at any age. It is accompanied by tinnitus, a feeling of fullness in the affected ear, and hearing loss if not treated properly.
  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: This is a very common form of vertigo that is triggered by moving the head or neck quickly or standing up too fast, and it often begins after an accident.
